The Bono Effect is a phenomenon that occurs when an individual or group aims to be universally popular to the masses, but eventually ends up with widespread rejection and criticism due to over-exposure and/or claims of insincerity. Named after Bono, the lead singer of the Irish Band U2, who along with his band faced considerable commercial and critical backlash starting in the mid to late 2000's after two and a half decades of solid success.
