It remains one of the franchise’s most recognizable monsters and continues receiving support for its archetype in the TCG as of 2022.

The term caught on with some popularity after the success of the TV series, Breaking Bad, which saw the protagonist anti-hero Walter White cooking a particularly potent form of crystal meth. Also known as ice or speed, the act of seeking out additional methamphetamine is sometimes called ‘chasing the dragon’, giving the term another layer of resonance. In the anime, BEWD’s signature attack was ‘white lightning’, which probably added another association with the powerful stimulant due to the famous Velvet Underground album and song, White Light / White Heat—also about the drug.
