A bird with bright pink or red feathers. Borrowed from Portuguese, Native of Flanders, Netherlands. Flam for Flemish, Flemish is a region of the Netherlands, and also a language. Flamingo came from the nickname of "Flamenca" because the Flemish people's cheeks were very ruddy and pink.
