The mother-in-law to a person who is residing with the paternal side of the family. If the male partner is residing with the female's parent(s) then the male undertakes the woman's role and addresses his mother-in-law as his lai lai.

lai lai is a greeting commonly used in the game Lost Ark. It can mean all sorts of things, usually with very positive connotations, however most people recognize it as a constant reminder of the existential dread that is eating them up from the inside as well as the agonizing pain they feel when whiping to Argos for the 5th consecutive time.
