Gossip used to be spread slowly at the water cooler, but emails to half a company is the main mechanism by which this gossip is spread. The occurrence of an event can be spread to everyone you don't want it to to within 5 minutes of the start of the work day with a single email.

By 8 a.m., all of the secretaries at work were running the gossip train on Jim when he got drunk at a company outing on Friday night and felt up the boss's wife and made out with the back of her neck after he puked in their washing machine.
