There is a difference between a "lick", "hitting a lick", and "catching a lick", a "lick" aside from Jazz, is contextual, a "lick"is either shot taken, i.e. punch is taken in a boxing match, or fight, but in urban setting a "lick"is generally a drug addict addicted to a specific substance, who will go to any length to get their fix, in another context a "lick" is a victim about to be taken for whatever goods or monies they may have, which the term " hitting a lick" comes from, lastly the term "catching a lick" comes from the sale of an illicit substance being sold to an individual who is a user of the illicit substance being purchased
"let we go catch this lick, and I'll get back to you" - drug transaction
"I need to hit a lick on a come up" - taking someone for the goods they own
"You need to stay away from them they ain't no good for you, they are a straight lick" -individuals addicted to illicit substances
