MIXLATTO

The words Mulatto and Mixlatto are often interchangeable because two Mulattos ALWAYS produce another Mulatto.

HOWEVER, a CHILD of two mulattos can also be correctly called a "Mixlatto", making those words indisputably synonymous.

OTOH, (On the other hand) and technically-speaking, ...a child who has one Caucasian (white) parent is ALWAYS a "Mulatto".

But, for those very few people whom have reportedly found the MUL prefix of "Mulatto" to be both, "derogatory, offensive & "dehumanizing", ... the use of MIXLATTO may be found to be much more agreeable to them.

1. Zoe Kravitz, actress, is a perfect example of a child who may be interchangably referred to, as either a "MULATTO" or a "MIXLATTO"

2. Carmen Uter, published author, & daughter of a (Wesort-mulatto father ) and an (Afro-Latina, mulata mother ), is a MIXLATTA.

MIXLATTO

1. Mixlatto and Mulatto are near-synonyms.

2. A true Mulatto has one (1) Caucasian (white) parent.

3. A true Mixlatto has two (2) "half-white"/
"half-Caucasian" parents , and a Mixlatto is, therefore, the child of two (2) true Mulattos.

4. Use of both terms is permitted as interchangeables, whenever necessary, to sometimes avoid pejorative expression of strong contempt toward the centuries-old, historical word, "Mulatto".

The pejorative use is currently ( in 2026) being vigorously carried out by certain people in society, and has constantly been done in various written materials, in a concentrated effort to belittle, disparage, and insult all persons of the large, and growing biracial, mixed-race community.
Bottomline:

So, in that vein, "MIXLATTO" may, at times, serve as a "protective word" to be used defensively, when needed.

Mariah Carey, singer, is a true Mulatto because although both of her parents were born in Latin America, ...only Mariah's mother is Causasian (white), and her father is of part-African/part-Latino heritage.
The Mixlatto v. Mulatto clarification that was once publicly-announced by Mariah's Mom, was obviously to explain why her children are truly MULATTO.

Then, perhaps it is a fact that Mariah is more Mulatto like Halle Berry, the actress, and not at all MIXLATTO, like Cardi B, the rap singer.
