This originated from Hartlepool due to hanging a monkey found on a shipwreck during the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, believing him to be a French spy and giving people from Hartlepool the nickname of “Monkey Hangers”! Monkey’s Blood references the red colour of Strawberry Sauce to the blood of the monkey.
