xan (pronounced “shän”) — the shimmering path of moonlight reflected across the surface of the sea or other body of water. Etymology: from the Yucatec Maya convention in which the letter x is pronounced “sh,” making xan phonetically identical to the Irish name Seán. Coined on Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
