A state of relationship in between friends and dating, characterized by a lack of long-term commitment as well as sexual and emotional exclusivity. This person is 'on standby' for a relationship but you are not yet dating.

No he's not my boyfriend, he's my standby. We might end up dating, we might not. We're figuring it out.
