The difference between "girlfriend" and "girl friend" is the space in between. That space is known as the Friendzone.

James: Dude, I proposed to a girl and she became my girl friend.
Charles: Wait, did you say girlfriend?
James: Nah man, add the friendzone in between the words.
Charles: That's sad man.
