social bungee

the systematic practice of taking socially unexpected leaps 'downwards' or 'sideways' upon successful completion of an undertaken social climb. has no apparent reason and no imminent guarantee of a safe landing. practised for the sake of conducting a social experiment, sending a social message, or pure pleasure.
related to, but not to be confused with, social suicide, martyrdom and burnout.

Q: 'Have you heard John quit his job as the Director of Marketing and is now a volunteer with the Red Cross?'
A: 'Again? Does he think making us look at his social bungee jumps is funny or something?'
