Ponton, originated from the English language words for 'Pontoon' and 'Town'. Once the oarsmen of small river craft on tributaries and minor rivers. Associated with the peasantry of Norfolk. The name ponton became a surname due to confusion during the English census of 1750. Owing to poor literacy among ponton oarsmen, the 'employment' and 'surname' categories were often confused. Thus ponton oarsmen became Mr ponton. Known as one of the most unusual surnames on the English language, as it has been created by accident.
