Ozymandias complex
The Ozymandias complex denotes a ruler's attempt to dictate posterity's judgment while still alive: declaring achievements rather than securing them, casting the self in gold before the record is in. Named for Ramses II, whose boast 'King of Kings: look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair' survives only as an inscription beside a broken statue. The complex describes a recurring pattern from Nero's Colossus to Ceaușescu's palace: the grander the self-monument, the harsher its afterlife as irony. Its defining error is structural, not aesthetic; history's verdict is written by those who count, not by those who commission, and every prepaid legacy becomes evidence for the prosecution.
