s-expressions (as in "symbolic expressions") are a notation for nested data structures used in Lisp-like programming languages. Parenthesis everywhere! Source code and data both use this notation, which enables meta-programming on steroids. Imagine a program that writes program-writing programs. It's kinda like that!
