Comes from a taboo on the Isle of Man where it is extremely bad luck to say the word "rat".

Manxman: I saw a bunch of longtails stuck together on the subway.

New Yorker: You wha...?

Manxman: Longtails, the hairy ones. The fat hairy ones.
