A subgenre of "respectable" horror movies which began in the late 2010s. They typically carry a social or moral message and are gloomy, gory, pretentious, and aimed at an audience more interested in queer/feminist subtext than scares and fun.
Expect boilerplate Tumblr politics, graphic violence but no female nudity, and laudatory reviews describing them as "slow burns", "giallo homages", or "bonkers".
Examples: Get Out, Us, Hereditary, Midsommar, It Comes At Night, Suspiria 2018, Candyman 2021, The Lighthouse, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Saint Maud, Possessor, Last Night in Soho, Titane, ect.
