i fear

conveys that the following or preceding sentence is a reality that can’t be denied, especially if it could be displeasing to the listener or speaker. similar to “im afraid” as in “i’m afraid it’s too late”.

“I fear you were in the wrong.”
“She killed it, I fear.”
