To mess something up, but you could have avoided the mess if you had listened.

Often used to describe a situation where willful ignorance or lack of attention leads to a preventable mistake.

"Tommy really mupt it up at baseball practice. If he would have listened to the coach, he would have hit the ball."

"I can't believe I forgot to bring my materials to the meeting; I totally mupt it."
