To make a significant error.

A saying derived from poor decision making. I.e choosing to eat the chips on a meal first and thus being too full to eat the main and most delicious part of the meal.

Similar phrases: Screwed the pooch. Fucked up.

Oh man, you really ate the chips on that one.
