1. In golf, an informal and non-regulation method of resuming play following an unforced error (e.g. a ball hit out of bounds, into water, or otherwise unplayable), wherein the player executes a drop without penalty and without adhering to the prescribed procedure of releasing the ball from knee height. Instead, the ball is casually thrown or placed, typically onto the fairway and often in the direction of the green.
