off-brand basic

used to describe a person who is almost basic, yet every basic thing she or he does is a little different than mainstream.

All the trendy people show up to school in fresh, white vans, but Mady shows up in white vans with double tan stripes along the side.
Syd: Whoa, Mady, I see you being off-brand basic!
Mady: Omg I know! I didn’t want to be too mainstream.
