Derivative of Conehead. Indianapolis slang used to describe the white urban hillbilly honky residents of the very near East, near west, and near Southside of Indy. Most cones came to Indianapolis as Appalachian Americans from Kentucky and Tennessee by way of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. These city hillbillies can be seen on their front porch during normal work hours, in local pubs, tailgating at Colts games without tickets, or in the back of a police car. Coined by Indianapolis firemen many years ago. Related terms are Hoosierbilly and white trash. The decedents of The Cone people are Mars-Hillians and Beech Grovers. The British version would be the cast of Trainspotting or any big city Ned with country roots. Many children of cones have moved out of the primary cone districts but still exhibit many cone-ish traits as such as fist fighting, alcoholism, and general tomfoolery.
