When you are watching something and note that it is changing, but you can't tell if it's increasing or if it's decreasing yet. You just notice that it has started to change.

He couldn't tell if the level in the pool was going up or it was going down yet, but all he knew for sure was that the level was creasing.

MONK 

Man Of No Knowledge - derogatory acronym for an individual who pretends to be aself-claimed expert on a topic, but actually possesses no real knowledge of that topic. The individual presents opinions that are not based in reality.

They hired this MONK to come in and tell us how to do our business, but it was immediately obvious that he had fooled them into thinking that he actually knew how to do anything.
