A savage.. a bit (rabid ) like for food . Deprived of food. Wild animal starved, finds bits and scraps.

Cavemen starving for food ate like animals.

That poor dog is starving he’s eating like a mongrel.

Back in the day cavemen ate like mongrels, not knowing when they would have there next meal.
