Pineapple Pizza Effect

1. The pineapple pizza effect is a social phenomenon where a number of people express an ungrounded aversion towards something, although they do not actually share this aversion personally. The term originates from the strong rejection of pineapples on pizza by people, despite not actually disliking it or having a preference. A "pineapple pizza" is a moniker used for things that are subjected to this phenomenon.

Often stemming from a desire to fit in or to exclude a particular group, this sudden development of strong opinions are only expressed verbally. When encountering a "pineapple pizza", people demonstrating this behavior are characterized to be instinctively driven to quickly react negatively, usually unwarranted, and unable to articulate the reason for their preference. When confronted with the opportunity to partake of the "pineapple pizza", it is expected that they would, despite what they say.
