An epidemic of fear and paranoia in reference to an episode of The Twilight Zone of the same name. The episode is about a hypothetical alien invasion.

The host of Pod Save America used the expression in reference to a Chinese spy balloon and the hysterics that followed.
"The Chinese send a balloon over here and we all go crazy! It’s a real Monsters Are Due On Maple Street vibe."
