The need we have to add an emoticon to a chat conversation after the person you are chatting with makes a comment. In doing so you are a) confirming you got the message b) letting them know how you feel about it c) buying yourself time to think of something meaningful to say.

Person 1: Sometimes I don't think anyone understands me.

Person 2: :-( (emoticonfirmation)
