Kurt Cobain was the singer and guitarist for 90's icon band Nirvana which released three studio albums, Bleach (1989), Nevermind (1991) and In Utero (1993). Heavy heroin addict and fairly average guitarist, however his wailing, husky voice and highly poetic and symbolic lyrics defined Nirvana as the definitive 'grunge' band of the 90's, which despite what many people believe they did NOT invent, grunge having its roots back in 80's hardcore punk, and the term itself being coined by Green River and later Mudhoney frontman Mark Arm, who described the style as "pure grunge, pure shit".

Cobain was underweight and of below average height (5'7 tall and 130 pounds), and (usually) wore his hair long with a 'designer stubble' style of beard. His hair however was also dyed numerous exotic colours, such as bright red and blue, at various times.

It can be argued that part of Cobain's continuing legacy is his rough good looks and 'everyman' quality. He was an outspoken critic of homophobia, sexism, racism etc., even going as far as to say "If you are either a racist, sexist, or in any other way an asshole, don't buy our albums. I don't want your money. Don't love me because I hate you."

Kurt Cobain died after battling lifelong depression on April 4th, 1994 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was 27. His suicide note was addressed to "Boddah", an imaginary childhood friend his parents invented for him to help him cope with his uncle being drafted during the Vietnam War.
