the multi-colored, round, spinning icon Mac's use to indicate that a process is occuring for which the user must wait or that the computer is experiencing an error; the Mac's equivalent of the PC's hourglass icon.

"Hey, Bill. Call the Helpdesk. I'm getting the spinning ball of death again!"
