The junior rank to 'Bassist' in the world of bass.
You are only truly a 'bassist' once you've proven your worth to your bass community. However, cutting your teeth in your first gig(s) and proving your ability to play the instrument with some skill makes you a 'Bassman'.
Some people prefer to keep this title because it sounds cool. For example in 1969 Paul McCartney gigged with a 'Bassman' sticker on his 'Violin bass'.
