A type of fanfiction that isn't centered around a ship or paring. May have side ships as long as it doesn't overshadow the story. Uncommon since shipping fics take up the bulk of fanfiction.

"I read this great fanfic yesterday"
"What paring was it for?"
"Nah man, it was a genfic."
