The state of being legally, spiritually or otherwise not married for a specified period of time. This is usually accomplished by a prayer to the powers that be (or a personal deity or through a personal belief system) to suspend any previous marriage contracts. If the person doing the praying is not immediately struck by lightning, then that person is deemed unmarried for the specified period.

I wish I were unmarried so that I could sleep with that hot girl/guy.

The act of not being in a committed relationship with another person. Unmarried people start out as virgins, but as they get older, some lose it due to tensions and pressures of committing sexual acts and sometimes have illegitimate children, known as bastards.

Ross: Unmarried women are either virgins or sluts.
Joey: Really? How so?
Ross: Well, dude, it's a known fact that women can only be one or the other, it's not like there's a third option of any sort.
Joey: I concur. You mean like your bastard child you had with Carol.
Ross: Yes, precisely, but we got divorced, because she's a lesbian.
