In an internet forum, this is when somebody posts something either highly controversial or just plain ignorant or stupid in a forum thread, or willfully derails a thread, thus inviting other forum posters to make all the return cheap shots and scornful insults they at the poster making the remark or post for being ridiculous, asinine, or beyond the pale.

Phrase used on message boards by people with giant egos. Also the online equivalent of farting in a crowded elevator.
A person writes their opinion on a message board thread's topic follwed by end of thread. Much faliure ensues.
