1) The second romance novel written by author Nicholas Sparks, set in the mid-to-late 1990's.

The story follows divorced single mother and former reporter turned researcher, Theresa Osborne, who while on a short break to Cape Cod finds a bottle washed up on the beach. Inside is a love letter, honest and intriguing. She is fascinated by it, and is compelled to find the writer after returning home to Chicago. When she discovers two more letters written by the same person, she manages to track them all to the small town of Wilmington, North Carolina, where she finds the writer, Garret Blake, a boat restorer.

She gets acquainted with Garret, but does not reveal her knowledge or possession of the letters. Later, when Garret visits her and her son in Chicago, he discovers the letters in a drawer and angrily confronts Theresa. After she explains, he leaves for Wilmington alone.

A year later, Garret's father tracks down Theresa to tell her of his son's death at sea. On the boat was found a final letter in which Garret apologises to his late wife and tells her that he has found a new love in Theresa, one he must fight for.
