An derogatory term used to describe people from West Virginia used in the Upper Ohio Valley region. It originated in East Liverpool, Ohio to refer to the West Virginians who would come across the river to look for work, but only had enough skills to make metal hoops for barrel construction.
A hoopie can be identified by their camo outfits, thick accents, obnoxious country music, beat up trucks, ungroomed appearance, chewing tobacco usage, and crude or uncultured behavior. The variant "Hoopjack" can also refer to these people. In some cases, "Hoopie" or "Hoopieland" can simply refer to the state of West Virginia. It is usually used to express the annoyance or displeasure of having to go to West Virginia. Lastly, "Hoopie" can be used to refer to the West Virginia Mountaineers football team in a derogatory manner.
