a hang over that kicks in later in the day. as if...you were to do drink into the wee hours of the morning, wake up still drunk, feeling fine and feel the effects around 3pm.

"ah man, last nite, i did drunk til like 5am, woke at 7am fo work and i gots a vicious holdover at about 3 in da aftanoon"

a ring that a man gives a woman when he proposes to her with the idea in mind that he will give her a more suitable engagement ring at a later date

Man wants to propose on New Year's Eve but can't have the engagement ring ready by that time, so he opts for a holdover ring, usually a band.

Can occassionally be used as a verb
