To stop a discussion or debate because you expect the outcome to devolve in a preordered process to something that approximates Godwin's Law. This usually occurs by someone with the wisdom or experience to anticipate such an outcome and may give the more vocal and/or calcified poster thinking he/she has won an argument.
I was going to post about how Microsoft's design choices have been responsive to user's stated desires but decided to "drown a kitten" as I thought of the other psuedo-religious technical discussions that already existed.
