used in technical theatre to describe twisting the ropes of a rail system with a belay pin to keep the lineset from moving while weights are being added or taken off, usually only done when the lineset will be significantly arbor or batten heavy. comes from the nautical term to belay.

I need you to belay lineset nine.

Belay On

Often used as a climbing term the phrase "Belay on" can also be used in regular conversation to let someone know they have YOUR permission to proceed on with whatever they are doing or about to do.

Roommate 1: "Dude I'm gonna go drop a duece, ok?

Roommate 2:"Belay on, Bro."

Or

Roommate 1: "Hey man I think I'll take out the trash tonight."

Roommate 2: "Belay on."

Belay Slave

A belay slave is someone you've hired for the day (usually payment in beer, weed whatever) to belay you while you work on a rock climbing project.
