The purest definition of asexual, is literally anti sexual. This means that they neither want or need sexual contact with another person to feel fulfilled.

However, some asexuals do want or even like sexual contact with their romantic partners. However, 95% of the time, it is solely for the benefit of their partners as many dislike sex or find little to no pleasure in the activity.
This is my own history.

me: I am asexual
person: But you've had sex before...
me: yes. But that doesn't mean that I wanted it.

person: you mean it was rape?
me: No. It was for their benefit. Plus I wanted to know what a sexual relationship was like. I quickly figured out that I do not like or want sex.

person: oh... you're weird.

me: its not weird, it's just unusual.

Person: were you abused ?
Me: sigh. Not before I worked out I was asexual.

person: you frigid then?
Me: are you stupid? No. I'm okay to have sex with my romantic partner if they really want it. For me, it does NOTHING.

person: then why do you have a romantic partner?
Me: because I am human and I like being able to have cuddles and kisses. I want a normal loving relationship, just without the sex.

Person: *now educated* oh... guess it makes things less of a headache with birth control and STDs then...

Me *slaps head*

As an asexual myself, I've seen many misconceptions about this term. Asexuality is not a "homogeneous category" . Although I don't speak for all asexuals and this isn't an exhaustive list, I'll hope to give more insights to this term since it's only been recently known to the scientific world.

According to Aven, an asexual is a person who "does not experience sexual attraction". That's it. That's all.

There are common misconceptions about asexuality:

1. "Asexuals don't like sex": Some don't want sex. But some enjoy having sex for the pure pleasure of having sex itself.

2. "Asexuality is just a phase/a choice": No, it's an orientation. People who identify as asexuals were born that way.

3. "You will never be in a relationship": There are many different types of asexuals in the world. No matter what, love is the main thing in a relationship for any sexual orientation.

4. "There's something wrong with you": There's nothing wrong with them. Asexuals are just as capable as anyone to lead and maintain a good, happy, and healthy life.
Person 1: You say you're an asexual but you love having sex? Asexuals don't feel any sexual attraction towards people, you're not an asexual!

Person 2: I'm asexual. I know because I am. Just because I'm not sexually attracted to people doesn't automatically mean I don't like sex.

There are two general meanings.

1. The absence of a sexuality, most notably in humans. Some may just not be sexuallly attracted to others, otehrs may completely lack a sex drive or sexual desires. Common misconceptions are that such people have suffered sexual abuse, are emotionally frigid, are closet homosexuals, masturbate ten times a day, are too ugly to get in a sexual relationship or are impotent. This, more often than not, does not apply.

2. Without sexual intercourse. For example, cells (be it nerve cells, bacteria or other protozoa such as amoeba) reproduce via mitosis (or dividing) as opposed to sexual reproduction. The result tends to be two cells of exactly the same genetic structure as the 'parent cell', though genetic mutation can occur if the DNA is duplicated incorrectly.

Connected words/phrases: asexuality, sexuality, sexual, mitosis, cell division, queer (asexuality is considered a queer sexuality. This is not a negatiive connotation, only meaning 'different').
1. I am not a closet homosexual, I am not impotent, I have not been sexually abused, I am not emotionally frigid, I don't masturbate ten times a day, and while I am one ugly bastard peopel round here are so easy I could get nookie the second I want it. I just don't want it. I am asexual.

2. Apart from rare cases where cells reproduce via meiosis (splitting into four cells), most cells reproduce via mitosis. Originally the human body is just one zygote cell, two gamete cells fused together. At adulthood, there are millions or perhaps billions of cells all with different purposes, nerves, muscle, skin, brain tissue... This is all possible due to mitosis, the non-sexual reproduction of the cells themselves. However, the human body requires sexual reproduction for the initial cell. An example without this is bacteria, which have no form of intercourse and simply divide. This is asexual reproduction.

Not having sexual desires. This does not stop a asexual from having a romantic relationship, it’s just that they are not interested in sex
Person A: Just found out my girlfriend is asexual
Person B: So?
Person A: Nothing. Still love her just as much
