A development of the well-known phrase "hair of the dog", being on the dog originally referred to drinking large amounts, but can also be used to refer to being on the ball with things such as work and sport.
Hows the work going mate?
Yeah really well, I'm really on the dog at the moment.

Hows the training for that 10k race going?
Not so great, I've fallen off the dog a bit, I'll be back on the dog properly next week though.

put on the dog 

Put on (the) dog is an expression that means ‘to make a display of wealth or importance, especially by dressing stylishly and flashily’. It’s similar in meaning to the later expression put on the ritz.
"In preperation for the large party, Bill really 'put on the dog'.

Putting on the Dog 

To act more sophisticated, affluent, or of greater importance than one really is.
Angela was really putting on the dog at last night's cocktail party. Little did those people realize she's just a humdrum accounting clerk.

Get the dog on the dog 

Can be used interchangeably depending on the context
Contexts could include getting really drunk or doing a task to the best of your abilities
Adam: Hey Felix, you ready to “Get the dog on the dog”?

Felix: Yeah let’s get blinded

Swear on the dog's life 

A phrase used to easily coerce a confession from a guilty child.
"Timmy, did you break the vase?"
"No."
"Do you swear on the dog's life?"
"I broke the vase."

Make yourself at home, get comfortable, act like you own the place, mi casa es su casa. An exclamation of welcome.
Hey, welcome to my house. Sit down, make yourself comfortable, spit on the floor and call the dog a bastard.

writing on the dog 

jargon/slang/lingo

A phrase that can be used as a response to a question about a person's current status.

Can replace the current phrases: "just chillin," "hanging out," and "relaxing."

The phrase is not connected to the physical act of writing on an animal.
Guy 1: "What are you doing?"
Guy 2: "Just writing on the dog."
Guy 1: "Cool."
