Used to replace terms African American or Black by people who disagree with being labeled African when they have no known relatives from Africa, or refuse to be labeled Black due to the disdain for having several ethnicities reduced to being identified as a color rather than an actual race.
When African American or Black are inadequate as labeling representation and possibly uneasy with many connotations of the term “black”.
