Classic rock was popular throughout the '60s and '70s and then mostly dissappeared in the '80s; replaced with Hair Metal, for some reason which I've yet to understand, as Hair Metal is simply awful.
All of Rock's best guitarists are Classic Rockers. (Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Gilmour, etc. etc.)
Real Classic Rock is Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, Sweet, Uriah Heep, Head East, Eric Clapton, Boston, Styx, Journey, Rush, Rolling Stones, Sammy Hagar, Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, Alice Cooper, Black Oak Arkansas, Foghat, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Queen, Rod Stewart, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Crowes, Janis Joplin, Foreigner, Pink Floyd, Steve Miller Band, T.Rex, The Who, Moody Blues, Yardbirds, Bad Company, ELO, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Nazareth, Joe Cocker, The Guess Who, Heart, Judas Priest, Cream, CCR, George Thorogood, Five Man Electrical Band, Velvet Underground, Golden Earring, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Deep Purple, J. Geils Band, Jackson Browne, Kansas, KISS, Cheap Trick, Dire Straits, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, The Youngbloods, Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top, David Bowie, Bob Seger, Curved Air, ARGENT, Humble Pie, The Beatles, Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, Doobie Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Doors, AC/DC, The Hollies, The Kinks, The Troggs, Tom Petty, Jethro Tull, Edgar Winter Group, etc.
Fake "Classic Rock" is Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Quiet Riot, Iron Maiden, etc.
Cream, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, KISS, New York Dolls, Aerosmith, Queen, Sammy Hagar, Montrose and Ted Nugent. It does not- I repeat- does NOT include Mötley Crüe, Guns N' Roses or Metallica as some of these ass holes seem to think.
(I, then, beat SF's face in with a Queen record)
Me: No, dipshit, THAT'S classic rock.
