Someone who has respect for themselves and realizes that you do not need drugs and alcohol (and sometimes sexual intercourse) to live a happy and prosperous; who goes against the current of "what's cool". Although it may occur with religion, it might just be the moral value and personal beliefs of a person.

No drinking,smoking,drugs,or casual sex-the clean,"pure" way of life.Straightedge are super arsed cool people who actually have pride in themselves,want to be decent people,and don't believe in going around and looking like a bunch of drunk,high,stupid,slutty morons-aka most of America's youth nowadays-just because they can.Not all straightedge people think that they're better than everyone else and not all of them try to force their views on others,so if you think that's how it is then just get over yourself already.I'm not saying that this is the best or only way to be,but everyone at least has the right to be whatever and whoever they want,so just accept it already or move along.Bascially stop hating on the straightedge for living how they want and they won't hate on you.*

Straightedge is considered the basic building blocks for self purification by many people who have claimed straightedge themselves. Vegans for the most part could even consider straightedge as their prime reason for opening their eyes to such horrors observed in human/non human animal relationships. The band earth crisis(a vegan straight edge band from Syracuse, NY) wrote a song called "the discipline". In that song they go on to say "straightedge, the discipline, the key to self liberation". This song soon became an anthem for anyone who wasn't a complete fucking waste of life, and those who decided to reach for enlightenment.
A lot of people in the hardcore scene claim that straightedge has saved their lives, meanwhile a large percentage of edge kids are doing it for fashion or to follow a trend. The most militant of the straightedge movement are said to have shit family lives, thus despising everything associated with getting fucked up. We've seen shit as young kids that most people don't see. The true edge kids/hardcore kids alike turn to hardcore for a way out.

A life choice made by those who's ego is the most defining characteristic they have. This ego is then justifed by, the belief that they are some how better than everyone else. These people are usually virgins with no friends, and like sheep, herd together to help boost each others egos. Straightedge, is a definition of a person who can't make a positive choice without fitting perfectly into a prearranged demographic. These people choose abstinence as a means to self justify. Meanwhile, their constant battle against temptation, coupled with their giant egos, causes them to become depressed, which they act out, (again with the support of the herd) in violence, and judgement of others.
These people don't understand that true positive choice goes much deeper than a tattoo and doesn't make u better or worse than anyone, or that we all have our own choices to make. and our own consequences .

Staightedge people are usually scene/emo but not necessarily. Staightedge basically means that someone refrains from drugs/alcohol, smoking and illicit sex. Most straightedge kids refrain from all three, but it can be any combonation. Many sxe people are also vegatarians or vegans and some are religous.

Someone who thinks they're better than everyone because they don't drink/smoke/do drugs/have random sex. Usually people say they're straightedge but still do one or all of the latter mentioned.
