In Sweden, the word is often used to describe someone who puts a lot of effort into school or someone who makes a lot of dribbles while playing a sport for fun. A mean way of saying someone has high ambitions
Common use of Try-hard (swedish version):
- Look at how much Oscar is dribbling.
- Yeah, he’s such a try-hard
Or
- Is Sven actually studying between the lessons?
- He’s a try-hard.

You are playing against a four-year-old, stop being a try-hard and let them think they stand a chance.

Originally (before the internets), someone that has stuff to prove to everyone while no one cares. A lot of efforts to blow a fart. With the internets : someone that will go above and beyond for some stupid crap no one cares about.
That TRY-HARD Jack wanted to film his cave exploring and now he's rotting face down in a pile of dirt below for ever when he had a wife and two kids.
