The general meaning of something. To "get the gist" means to understand something, but not to be expert in it.

Bob: Did you read Moby Dick last night?

Another word for gossip. To give you the gist of a situation that is gossip worthy.

Often response to gist is to "gist me".

Origin of this is Nigeria but its used in London lingo

Friend: "OMG I have gist! You won't believe what happened"
Me: "Gist me!"

EXAMPLE:

Chris: Its hard to explain man..
Chris: Its a long story!
John: ok so skip the story then man, just give me the gist!

John: oh.. ok i see!
