To throw one's hat in (as "in the ring") is to:
1) to challenge or contend for something.
2) nominate someone or oneself for something. To volunteer.
A boxing metaphor that originated in the early 19th century when one who wished to challenge a boxer would throw his hat into the ring as a way of having your challenge noticed in a crowded ring.

In 1912 Theodore Roosevelt, who was an advid boxer, was the first presidential candidate to use "throw my hat in the ring" to announce his run at the U.S. presidency.

The act of quickly following a paying driver through a toll station before the cross member falls thus blocking your otherwise mad escape OR tailgating someone very closely through an EZ Pass lane with the same intent. This tactic can also be employed with great success exiting parking decks.
Thanks to my toll drafting skills I save over $350 dollars in tolls this year while only being hit with 2 fines worth $60 and making good time the EZ Pass lane to boot.

To scan over something or someone quickly; to measure without using any tools other than the naked eye; guessing; approximating. A term often used in sports scouting to see if a player or team passes muster without looking at any metrics.
We passed on that short receiver because he didn't pass the ball test.
I know that actress just walked in off the street, but but she passes my eyeball test. Get her signed and to the studio pronto!
I left a blind date before I even sat down. She didn't pass my eyeball test.
That presentation needs to be reformatted to read better. Its simply doesn't pass an eyeball test.

Yet another colorful coloquialism for taking a dump: "Beaming" for the act of evacuation, "Schatner" as in the past tense of To shit (shat), and "off the Enterprise" denoting out of the anus (as in "the prize to be entered").
Not to be confused with Beaming Dr. Bones onto the Enterprise; the act of anal sex.

The small coffee size at Starbuck's; the only size on the menu there that makes any sense (et al Tall, Grande, Vente).
"Short" is the smallest size Starbuck's offers, but you'll only get this if you ask for it by name. If you do order a "small" the barista will likely give you a "Tall" because anyone asking for a "small" will get the "Tall", which is the smallest size for which the prices are actually on the menu. Also only their hot drinks can be served in the "Short" size. Sound confsing? Yeah, I hate Starbuck's too!
