The term was coined in the 1980s, with settings typically featuring a juxtaposition of high-tech development, such as cybernetics and artificial intelligence, with societal breakdown or radical change. Cyberpunk narratives often focus on anti-heroes, hackers, and other disenfranchised individuals living on the fringes of society, struggling against oppressive systems. The word "Sigma" originated as a letter in the greek alphabet. However, in recent years it has begun to adopt an internet slang meaning. From early 2021, videos began appearing on TikTok of people editing Patrick Bateman in the movie 'American Psycho.' In late 2022 and 2023, there was mass spreading of a short clip which featured Patrick Bateman doing a series of facial expressions, often accompanied by multiple other videos, often of characters smiling and lightly shaking their heads. The clip was soon shortened to just Patrick Bateman. He would pout out his lips in a kissing expression and then smile. It is unknown who captioned the clips with the word Sigma, but it soon became viral. While with the fame of people like Andrew Tate, who promoted masculinity, Sigma was defined as a strong, masculine person. Although originally meant to be a serious word used to describe men who focused on themselves instead of women, people memed it. Users on TikTok started saying how people would say "Sigma" over anything, and influencers endorsed this idea, posting somewhat unfunny and rude videos ending with the Patrick Bateman clip. Today, Sigma is a word that is almost always only used in an ironic sense.

Peter: "Yeah, thats a Sigma mindset."
