ˈpɔ ta Term used in parts of northern Italy without a defined meaning but mainly used as:
1. Synonymous of the English "well" (to begin a sentence);
2. A standalone exclamation, as an expression of amazement, inability to act in the past or change the current situation, disappointment;
3. Introducing a complex sentence justifying the inability to act in the past or change the current situation;
4. Introducing a complex sentence expressing disappointment.

The term comes from the dialect and is used in informal interactions between people of any age. It's not considered polite/usable outside of Lombardy. The rest of the sentence may be either in dialect or Italian.

Sometimes followed by "figa" (slur for vagina, pussy) "casso"(slur for penis, dick, often used as the English "fuck"), in this order.
-"Pota! How could I know?"

-"Pota, I was in Bergamo Alta, wasn't I? And suddenly..."

-"Do you want to go out for a brunch?"
-"Pota figa! If I knew it sooner I would have eaten less polenta."

-"Pota figa casso! I told you so! You can't go around for Torbole with that tanktop, people will think you're a southerner"

-"Pota!"
