limp needles

when you're driving and you come to a stop, your speedometer and rpm needles go limp or down.

My car got limp needles yesterday when i hit that stop sign.

professional amateur

Someone that is and will always be an amateur. A person that will never move to the next level and will never become better at a particular sport, job etc. They are called "professional" amateurs because it is almost like they are good at being mediocre.

That guy's a professional amateur, he's been working the same job for 25 years and hasn't moved up.
